Accessories

decor adds energy to home office

Asian

Natural elements and colors found in nature are an integral part of Asian design. Accessories often feature hand-painted ornamental designs or fabrics with a similar look. Complete an Asian vignette with accessories in clean, contemporary lines to convey a serene atmosphere.

Coastal

Inspired by the ocean, coastal design evokes a light and airy environment. Nautical or beach-themed accessories, like seashells and starfish, are mixed with woven, textural elements. Look for accessories in beachy hues like blue, white and sand.

Contemporary

Neutral elements are mixed with a few pieces in a bold color to create a contemporary vignette. Lighting, which features straight lines and sleek metallic finishes, is often used as an artistic statement.

Cottage

Comfort is key in cottage style. Look for soft colors, fresh flowers and accessories with a weathered or distressed finish.

Country

Muted hues are paired with pops of red, black or white accents in country style. Look for accessories with a handmade rustic quality, including pottery and baskets. Wood also plays a prevalent role in country design.

Designer's Notes/Bath Suites

Designer's Notes

A Mediterranean feel was achieved in this powder room with the warm wall finish. The walls were faux-finished with plaster relief arabesque motifs scattered about. A soft glaze was washed over for an aged feel, which complements the mirror and etagere.

A 1950's vintage bathroom can still be revitalized. A custom-designed vanity with an open storage compartment can visually give the illusion of more space. The area below can be used to stack towels and other toiletry items in neat boxes. The walls were covered in a coral-colored grasscloth for a wow factor.

A small powder room can benefit from a unique vanity cabinet. Here, the vanity cabinet is floating above the floor and has a capiz shell inlaid panel. This detail is repeated in the custom Venetian plaster finish on the walls and the border of the mirror.

Don’t be afraid to use a dark paint color, as long as you balance it with colors and textures that reflect light easily like glossy white wainscoting and polished metals. This is the color I used on my own bathroom, I added a terrazzo floor to pick up the colors in the wall and retain the white onto the floor.

Black-and-white marble tile, silver blue paint and charcoal gray concrete counters add trendy charm to this 1940’s home.

This completely gutted and redesigned  bathroom  includes a steam shower, large tub and double-sink vanity. The custom cherry blossom tile mosaic is from Ann Sacks and makes the bathroom feel unique and luxurious. Because the mosaic was an expensive addition, simple, inexpensive tiles were selected for all other areas of the bathroom to avoid breaking the bank.

Wood You???

E-Legno’s wooden bathtubs make bathing a relaxing ritual. Made of Canadian cedar (though the manufacturer does accept custom orders with different wood options), the E-Legno bathtub smells as good as it looks: cedar’s aromatic scent is sure to lull you into a transcendental state.

At 200 l x 110 w x 58 h cm, the tub offers a perfect fit while still providing lots of room for water—it holds 350 liters. Lean back against the soft wood; let your skin feel the natural texture. The Japanese have long realized the benefits and pleasures of bathing in wooden tubs; and with the Italians having taken over the concept, the E-Legno tub is designed with modern convenience in mind. Now everyone can bring home the healing power of soaking in wood—why hadn’t we all thought of this before?

E-Legno’s bathtubs come in round and oval shapes (excluding special orders, should you desire an octagon or other polygonal shape), and either design takes into account the curves of the body. If you’ve ever lay back in a bathtub and encountered a hard angle beneath your neck, you’ll appreciate this ergonomic detail; after all, the entire purpose of the bath is to relax your muscles, not aggravate them further. And the gorgeous tubs are also non-toxic, which should come as no surprise since E-Legno’s bath line promotes physical well-being.
Carpenter Francesco De Martino—like many Italian craftsmen, who inherit centuries of design (and must feel pressured to equal their longevity)—takes care to build a product that will last generations. During the first year, the water-resistant cedar will require some maintenance (E-Legno includes an ecologically-safe wax), but the result is worthwhile: the organic material will retain its beauty, and beauty is always in style.
